Job Description – Visiting Medical Practitioner
(Applicable for Medical Officer / Registrar / Senior Registrar / Consultant)
Position Summary
The Visiting Medical Practitioner provides medical oversight and professional consultation for residents of the care home on a service agreement basis. This role involves on-site visitation when indicated or upon request, supporting the clinical team in managing resident health, ensuring continuity of care, and maintaining medical standards in line with regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Attend on-site when requested by the matron, care manager, or attending nurse for medical assessments, emergencies, or care reviews.
- Conduct medical consultations, examinations, and treatment plans for residents as required.
- Confirm and certify clinical events (e.g., changes in care needs, end-of-life confirmation, death certification where applicable).
- Review and advise on care plans, medication charts, and treatment protocols.
- Provide guidance to nursing staff and caregivers regarding medical management, infection control, and patient safety.
- Liaise with residents’ families and next-of-kin to explain diagnoses, treatment options, or changes in condition.
- Refer residents to hospitals, specialists, or diagnostic services when further intervention is required.
- Maintain accurate and timely medical documentation in resident health records.
- Participate in periodic case reviews or multidisciplinary meetings if requested.
- Ensure compliance with PHRC and Ministry of Health standards, including ethical and professional conduct.
Requirements
- MBBS or equivalent degree from a recognized institution.
- Valid registration with the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC).
- (Registrar / Senior Registrar / Consultant) – Board certification or postgraduate qualification in relevant specialty.
- Proven clinical experience in internal medicine, geriatrics, family medicine, or related field preferred.
- Strong communication skills with patients, families, and multi-disciplinary teams.
- Ability to work on a flexible, on-call visitation basis.
Terms of Engagement
- Service agreement basis; not a full-time employment role.
- Remuneration: Per-visit or per-call fee, as agreed in the service contract.
- Expected to attend within a reasonable timeframe when called (emergencies prioritized).
- Frequency of visits: As indicated by resident need (scheduled or on-demand).
Reporting Structure
- Reports to: Medical Director / Care Home Matron
- Works closely with: Nursing staff, caregivers, physiotherapists, external specialists
