The Head of Medical serves as the organisation's most senior clinical leader, providing strategic oversight of clinical governance, quality, patient safety, and medical workforce development. The position plays a pivotal role in advancing clinical excellence and representing the organisation's interests with government agencies, regulatory bodies, donors, and other key stakeholders.
The Head of Medical is responsible for shaping and implementing the organisation's clinical strategy, ensuring consistent standards of patient care and professional practice across all locations. The role will drive compliance with regulatory and professional requirements, strengthen governance and quality frameworks, and foster a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement. In addition, the Head of Medical will lead medical workforce planning, capability development, and succession initiatives to support sustainable healthcare delivery and long-term organisational growth. Based in Port Moresby, this senior leadership position requires regular travel throughout Papua New Guinea to support clinical operations, engage with stakeholders, and deliver strategic priorities.
Key Responsibilities
· Lead clinical governance, credentialing, and quality & safety frameworks across all clinics and reporting clinical performance and risk .
· Champion patient safety and continuous improvement, including incident review, infection control, and clinical risk management.
· Foster the growth and development of clinical staff through effective mentoring, recruitment, credentialing, and continuing professional development initiatives, building a strong pipeline of local clinical leaders.
· Contribute clinical insight to strategy, budgeting, service expansion as part of the Senior Leadership Team.
· Represent the organisation in all clinical and medical engagements with regulators, donors, and partner organisations, and serve as the primary spokesperson on clinical governance, patient care, and healthcare standards.
About You
Essential Qualifications and Experience
· Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) with current registration, or eligibility for registration, with the PNG Medical Board.
· At least 10 years' post-registration clinical experience, including experience in a senior clinical leadership capacity.
· Demonstrated expertise in clinical governance, quality improvement, patient safety, and regulatory compliance, preferably within multi-site healthcare operations or resource-constrained environments.
· Exceptional judgement, adaptability, cultural awareness, and resilience, with the ability to lead effectively in challenging operational settings.
· Proven experience working in Papua New Guinea, the Pacific region, or similar environments, including collaboration with government agencies, donors, development partners, and international health organisations.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
· Postgraduate qualification in a relevant clinical discipline.
· Health management or leadership qualification, such as an MPH, MBA, or equivalent.
